Magdalena Abakanowicz creates radical sculptural works from woven fibres. They are soft rather than hard; fuzzy and organic; towering pieces suspended from the ceiling, pioneering a new form of installation. They are called Abakans.
The exhibition explores this transformative period in the artist's practice, where her woven forms leave the wall and move into three-dimensional space. Through these works, she brings soft, fibrous forms into a new relationship with sculpture.
I learnt from the author's documentary that the author imagined the monsters she thought she was knitting when she knitted this group. Huge, thick and floating in the sky, as if it would open its mouth and eat you in the next moment, it would have felt more real to me to see it in person. It's really quite stunning and can only be experienced by seeing it with your own eyes.
